Our History
Our parish has been part of the fabric of this region since 1859 — two historic churches, generations of faithful people, and a story that continues to unfold today.
Christ Church West Goulburn
Christ Church West Goulburn was established in 1884. Land for the church was purchased for 100 pounds, and the building was designed and built by the Reverend Canon Soares, the first Rector, who served from 1877 to 1897.
The church was built at a cost of 746 pounds. The chancel and sanctuary were added in 1912, the church hall was built during 1964–1965, and further extensions were completed in 1978.
Christ Church is modest yet beautiful in its simplicity. Behind the Communion table is a stained-glass tripartite window designed by local artist and church member Kathy Cole, depicting the risen Christ the King with followers worshipping at his feet.
St Bartholomew’s Windellama
St Bartholomew’s Anglican Church sits in an open paddock along Windellama Road, 38 kilometres south-east of Goulburn. It is a peaceful historic setting that has been at the heart of the Windellama district for more than 165 years.
The foundation stone was laid on 27 October 1859, inspired by the vision of Rev’d Richard Cartwright, son of Rev’d Robert Cartwright. Rev’d Cartwright died just two months later, leaving behind a church that has endured and been cherished by generations.
Historic Cemetery
Alongside the church is a historic cemetery that tells the story of the Windellama district, with inscriptions dating back to 1854, a memorial wall dedicated on 27 August 1995, and a War Memorial honouring local men who gave their lives in both World Wars.
The cemetery has recently been classified by the National Trust of NSW, recognising its cultural and community significance.
Continuing Story
These churches are not only historic buildings. They remain places of worship, memory, welcome and Christian hope. The story that began in the nineteenth century continues today through the parish community gathered across West Goulburn and Windellama.
